How Much Protein Do You Need to Build Muscle?

How much protein do you need to build muscle? There has been disagreement about this for the past 100 years I think. In fact, since man (or woman) first picked up a boulder, bench pressed it, and did a monster size, most muscular pose; there has been a clash between the "eat till the protein comes out of your ear" group and the "you don't need no blanking protein to build muscle; look at a rhino" camp.

High Protien Diet

When I first started pumping iron, the two camps seemed best represented by Bill Pearl with the "you do not need a lot of protein," and Vince Gironda who advocated some serious protein usage. Following some of what Vince suggested; I would eat nothing but steak and eggs for breakfast during football season and carbo up with a ton of spaghetti on game day. It seems crazy now.

High Protien Diet

I guess I have followed the high protein thought pretty much my whole life. When I worked out heavily, I would average a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. I would eat about 180 to 220 grams of protein a day. Those periods when I did not work out quite as much, I still consumed about a 100 grams a day. Did it work for me? Was high protein what help me put on close to 210lbs of decent muscle back a few years ago (or eight)? Maybe or maybe not; I could not definitely say because I had no benchmark to go by.

So, how much protein is enough protein? That question seems a lot like another question which asks, "How long should a man's leg be?" An answer could be, "as long as it takes to reach the ground." You need as much protein as it takes to build muscle, for you.

The Mayo clinic recommends that protein intake be about 10% to 35% of a 2,000 calorie diet. That amount translates to a whopping range of 50 to 175 grams of protein. That is huge range and not much help. Even among the experts, there is some question marks, or at least that is how I interpret being given such a wide range.

And no wonder, after all; you cannot understate the importance of protein to everyday living, let along muscle building. Protein is essential to human life. Your skin, bones, muscles and organ tissue all contain protein. Protein is found in your blood, hormones and enzymes, too.

You need protein. The question is again, how much do you need? Your body takes the ingested protein and breaks it down into its amino acid components for use. The body cannot store unused protein. Any unneeded amino acids are stripped of its nitrogen and stored as fat (or used as energy). The nitrogen elements are processed as waste by your kidney and liver. Not being an expert or a guru here, you may want to verify all this, but I think I am in the ballpark.

So, if you only need 100 grams but eat 180 grams, guess what, the balance of the 80 grams is either fat around the gut or pooped out. Either way, the excess causes undue stress on the body. Protein is not a good source of energy, unless you are a big cat roaming the plains of the Serengeti. Hence, there is no incentive to eat more protein than you need. Quite the contrary, you punish your body by consuming more than you need.

But understand this, after all the thousands and thousands of years, there is still no scientific basis for thinking that high protein consumption is better for building muscle. There is no scientific rationale for thinking that you need a gram of protein for every pound of bodyweight. There are none that I know of.

None other than what appears to be commonsense. If by all agreement, your average bear needs 45 to 70 grams of protein (woman and man, respectively); then would it not stand to reason that your muscle building grizzly bear would need a lot more? The red flag, though, is that a lot of supplement companies out there use this sort of reasoning to push a lot of expensive protein powders.

As for what I suggest, well, this is what I do. Being nearly 49, I just do not have the energy, or the desire to be a gym rat again. But that does not mean I am not interested in working out or being healthy. To the contrary, with two little girls, I have tremendous incentive to live a long life; long enough to see my little girls eventually have their own little girls.

I eat a balance diet with lots of veggies and fruit. And I drink about 10 to 15 cups of water a day. As a true meat eater, I probably get my daily 75 grams easy. But because I do work out about 45 minutes every other day fairly hard, I now drink about two tall glasses of milk daily. And I probably consume about 12 eggs a week, or so. All that probably bumps my protein intake up to about an average of 110 grams a day which I think works for me.

But it is all an inexact science. How do I know it works for me? Well, less than that; I get hungry and cranky. Vince Gironda used to say that protein keeps the hunger pains away and gives you the full feeling. I will buy that. I do know that if I drink any less water, I feel parched. Any less protein and I feel cranky. Is that really a true rationale for eating my 100 to 110 grams of protein, no, but it is my way of listening to my body.

And that is ultimately the key here, I think. You need to listen to your body. Your body will tell you if you are not consuming enough complex carbohydrates. Your body will tell you if you are eating too much protein (the increasing girth will be sign).

If nothing else, start with your baseline protein need of 75 grams and add 50%; then assess how you respond. How are your workouts? What are your energy levels like and how fast are you recovering? Based on those observations, either cut back or add a little more. I have talked about the 3 circles and how you should move those around; well, same thing here.

Lastly, I no longer recommend buying tons of protein powder. Instead I think you would do just as well to drink more milk (or soy) and have a few more eggs a day. These are quality sources of protein and pennies on the dollar compared to the protein powder on the market today. A quart of milk and 3 eggs will add about 56 great grams of protein to your diet. Do you need more?

Also, if you eat three balanced meals a day with about a quarter pound of meat as a part of that meal; you will probably consume about 28 to 30 grams at that seating. That gives you anywhere from 80 to 90 grams a day. Now add in the extra milk and eggs; that will put you in the 150 gram range. And guess what, you did not have to buy a super premium nitrogen enhanced, whey concentrate, and super-duper hi-test protein powder.

High Protein Food - The Key to Feeding the Furnace

As every bodybuilder knows, have the battle is having the proper diet for your goals, and there isn't a successful workout regiment around that doesn't include a diet loaded with high protein food. High protein food comes in many forms, and while most people automatically assume meat, that isn't always the best source (although meat does consistently provide a high level of protein). Beans, shakes, and whey protein are just a few of the other options available, and all of them provide the protein building blocks needed to be part of a great bodybuilder's diet.

High Protien Diet

High protein foods should definitely be at the top of your diet list whether the goal is to become a high level bodybuilder, lose weight on a diet, or some middle of the road combination of both. Protein is definitely your friend.

High Protien Diet

There are many high protein food that you should consider as part of your diet. Some of these foods include:
o Buffalo
o Turkey
o Lean Beef
o Chicken
o Fish
o Organic Beans
o Whey Protein (supplement added to shake)
o Eggs
o Nuts (go for unsalted and unsweetened)
o Skim Milk
o Cheese

These are just some of the great foods groups that provide high protein food. There are many other choices, but that list includes some of the best, and a good mix of these foods will help you build muscles, maintain your current muscle mass, and eat foods that will heal your muscles after workouts. High protein food is an absolute necessity to get into, and stay in, good healthy shape.

If there is a downside to high protein food, it's that the majority of them are high in fat, and some are very high in cholesterol. Some fats are good, but even if you have "good fat" like from fish, nuts, or olive oil, you don't want too much. Then there are the terrible saturated fats and cholesterol that can harm you, threatening with heart disease and clogged arteries. This is where finding the good high protein food comes in. Fish, chicken, turkey, and beans are all considered some of the absolute best high protein foods because they are high in protein, tend to have more good fat than bad, and less of it (although some nuts are certainly high in the fat category).

That being said, you need to have a protein heavy diet, and there are plenty of great high protein foods that have reasonable amounts of fat. One of the major reasons pork was left off the list in this article isn't because that's a low protein meat (in fact it's one of the best), but pork is one of the most unhealthy meats due to the bad fats and cholesterol and isn't a good add. Meanwhile, grilled fish and chicken almost always make the list of top notch high protein foods that can be added to any diet without worry.

So do your homework, decide on the best combination of high protein food and you will be on your way.

How to Use Whey Protein Supplements

Whey protein supplements are safe and used casually by people for an additional method of antioxidant intake to bodybuilders with a conscious effort of weight gain. Whey is best know for its ability to assist in building muscle mass. Increased muscle mass also produces weight gain as muscle out weighs fat. Body builders work extremely hard at turning that additional weight gain into a ripped body.

High Protien Diet

The weight gained from whey protein supplements should be managed through a ridged workout schedule combined with a formatted protein diet. By following a regulated workout routine, the increased muscle mass can produce awesome results. You must stick with the exercise and workout routine to prevent the possible heavy weight gain from ending up in places you rather it not be. Stay driven and the whey protein drinks and bars will pay off.

High Protien Diet

Because whey protein supplements can produce negative effects when not properly managed through a good diet and exercise program, it is advised to seek advice on your whey protein diet. Bodybuilding trainers and diet professionals can provide answers to whether or not a protein diet is right for you. Remember, most name brand manufacturers have websites. They normally reply to any email question concerning their products.

NOTE: It is advised to consult a health care practitioner before starting any diet.

To see the possible results of whey protein supplements, you should visit a local gym. Talk to the manager and find a few regulars that maintain a thorough workout program. Without getting to personal, you can ask about their consumption of whey protein supplements. You will surely find that many combine whey protein with a ridged workout schedule to cultivate weight gain and turn it into ripped muscle mass. remaining devoted to the program is generally the answer to how they get positive results.

Devotedness to the routine as well as to the supplements remains at the top of the success factor list. Anaerobic workouts are used for sculpting the abs, pectorals, triceps and deltoids. Remember, you will not get the body of the hulk by consuming whey protein and talking about circuit training. You must stay devoted to the workout program as well as the protein diet.

It should not be an issue finding the right workout program and protein diet for you. Determine what you goal is and your available time. Set a schedule and stick to it. Devotion is the name of the game. Continue working out no matter what supplement you decide on.

High Protein Diet - The Secret of Bodybuilders For Ripped Abs

Since the 1950's bodybuilders have been using high protein diets in their quest for leanness and greater muscle definition. Steve Reeves followed a high protein/low carb diet before his Mr. America win. In the 1960's Mr. Olympia Sergio Oliva would change his diet from high protein/high carb in the off season to a high protein/low carb precontest, to dial in his definition in his three Mr. Olympia victories. Arnold Schwarzenegger was famous for his very high protein/low carb precontest diet in his seven Mr. Olympia victories.

High Protien Diet

Frank Zane brought to the sport of bodybuilding an anatomy chart level of definition and achieved it using a zero carb/high protein diet. Athletes, actors and actresses have been using increased protein/low carb diets for weight control and weight loss for the last fifty years. The question is why this methodology has been effective for so many, for so long. A hi protein/low carb diet allows a person to minimize hunger while reducing calories. This is the premise behind the famous Atkins diet. These type diets allow the dieter to eat plenty of satisfying food while still losing weight. Take a look at the eating plan I recently used to lose 35 lbs in two months.

High Protien Diet

Meal 1, 6 eggs with cheese. Meal 2, 1 chicken breast and a large salad. Meal 3, 8 oz hamburger in a spinach wrap. Meal 4, 10 oz broiled fish and steamed veggies. Meal 5, Muscle Milk protein supplement. Meal 6, 12 oz broiled tilapia and steamed veggies. By anybody's rating I ate plenty of food yet I was not hungry and I lost a good deal of weight. A recent study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated that people lost weight and did not feel excessive hunger on an elevated protein diet. The proponents of this study determined that that a high protein diet created a greater degree of appetite satiation than did either a high carb or high fat diet. Lose weight without feeling hungry, is this the Holy Grail of weight loss? Another benefit of a high protein diet is that even in its low carb version, the body is supplied with everything it needs to rebuild and repair muscle tissue. In many cases the increased protein/ low carb dieter can actually gain muscle mass while losing bodyfat.

What does this mean for people trying to improve their bodies? This means with a little discipline and organization an individual can lose weight without starving and without getting weak and feeble. We all know as a nation, we collectively need to lose weight. I call on our leaders to do their part and direct the masses in embracing more protein/lower carb lifestyle eating.

What is the Zone Diet?

What exactly is the Zone Diet? Developed by Barry Sears, who has a Ph.D. in biochemistry, many describe it as a high protein, low carbohydrate weight loss plan. The nutrient breakdown recommendation of the diet is 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat (40:30:30). Some consider it a low carb diet. Technically however, since the majority of the calories come from carbohydrates, there are those who would argue that it is not.

High Protien Diet

Foods in the Diet

High Protien Diet

The foods in the diet are suppose to come from lean proteins such as chicken and turkey breast. The carbohydrates are to come from fruits and non-starchy vegetables and the fats from canola and olive oil.

Their are also many foods such as carrots, corn, bananas and baked goods that are restricted from the diet. Whole milk and dairy products are also not allowed.

Benefits of the diet

There are several benefits to the diet that provide motivation behind the diet's design:

Slow the absorption of carbohydrates Help stabilize insulin and lower blood glucose levels Lower total cholesterol risk Reduces hunger

Because of these factors, your risk to heart disease and diabetes are lowered. The fact that it helps to reduce hunger, which can be a major drawback of many other diets, is an added bonus.

Drawbacks

The major drawback of the diet is that it restricts many foods that are considered nutritious. To make up for the nutrients loss from not eating these foods, Sears recommends dietary supplements.

Like many diets that go over the recommended amount of protein of the USDA, many dietitians take issue with the 30 percent of protein. This has to do with the concern that it may damage kidneys. This may not be a concern for those with normal kidney functions, but it may be a concern for those with mild problems.

Another drawback of the diet is that it requires a good bit of measuring and calculating which in the beginning can be quite time consuming and confusing. To alleviate this, you can elect to buy the meals, which can run you around dollars a day.

Lastly, even though some studies have shown that it can reduce hunger, the diet may be hard to follow long term since it is very calorie restricted. As for the seemingly contradiction, the studies followed the 40:30:30 principle, not the very low calorie restriction.

Overall Impression

The basic concept of the diet is fine. However, the restriction put on certain foods is troubling. When carrots, which is high in vitamin A, is off the list, you should be careful at how closely you follow the diet.

If you decide to follow the diet, you may want to increase the calories as well as include nutritious foods that the diet restricts. As for how much to eat, staying at your BMR is the best.

With a little tweaking to take into your personal concerns, the Zone diet will definitely help you lose weight in addition to improving your overall health.

High Protein High Fiber Diet - The Key to Achieving Your Weight Loss Goals

If you've ever experimented with diets, you probably know how hard it is to stick with a plan. Some diets leave you feeling hungry, others lethargic. There are many bad diet plans out there. The key to achieving your weight loss goals and maintaining them is by following a high protein high fiber diet.

High Protien Diet

A high protein high fiber diet that is low in carbohydrates will keep you feeling full after meals. On the other hand, many fad diets out there tell you to eat only fruits and vegetables, leaving you feeling hungry and tired. A high protein high fiber diet will leave you feeling energized. A low fiber high protein diet is not a good option because protein and fiber are an excellent combination. You digest them more slowly when they are combined versus when they are consumed separately, making you feel full for longer.

High Protien Diet

Protein is important because it is rich in essential and non-essential amino acids. Protein is a building block for muscles and maintains a healthy immune system, blood flow, and enzymes. Protein intake can also help you lose weight because you body burns more calories in order to assimilate protein. Fiber is important for digestion and overall good health.

Good Sources of Protein and Fiber

In a high protein high fiber diet, it is important to get your protein and fiber from both plant-based foods and animal foods for the best results. If you are vegetarian, you can get your protein from plant-based foods but in somewhat lower concentrations.

Animal foods that are an excellent addition to a high protein high fiber diet are dairy products, fish, poultry, eggs, and meat. Make sure to eat lean cuts of meat because fatty meat contains too much cholesterol and unsaturated fat. Vegetarians can get both protein and fiber from whole grains and legumes such as beans and quinoa. In order to ensure that you are getting enough fiber, eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. So there you have it. A high protein high fiber diet will help you feel energized and healthy.

Furthermore, high protein and fiber intake will help you feel satisfied after meals and help you achieve your weight loss goals. In sum, a high protein high fiber diet is an important stepping stone to good health.
